Cutera HR Laser Patient Education

What is the Excel HR Laser?

Excel HR is a laser system for providing treatment to reduce unwanted, pigmented hair.
The 755 nm and 1064 nm wavelengths are indicated for temporary and permanent hair reduction on all skin types. Permanent hair reduction is defined as long-term, stable reduction in hair counts observed at 6, 9 and 12 months after the end of a treatment regime.

How does the Excel HR laser work to reduce hair?

The Excel HR selectively targets the hair follicle responsible for re-growth without causing thermal damage to the surrounding tissue Permanent hair reduction is achieved by using heat to disable the hair follicle and prevent re-growth. The excel HR laser targets the melanin in the hair follicle; therefore, hair must be brown or black. The excel HR laser does not target and cannot be absorbed by white, gray, or red hair.

How is the procedure performed?

During the laser treatment, you will be given a pair of goggles that protect your eyes from the intense laser light. Next, we will apply a cooling gel to the area being treated. The laser will be placed against the skin and the treatment will start. Once ready, the Excel HR hand piece is passed one-time-over the area of unwanted hair. Most patients experience a stinging sensation as the pulse of energy is delivered through the hand piece. To minimize discomfort and protect the patient’s skin, the laser’s sapphire window provides epidermal cooling as the treatment is being performed. A topical anesthetic gel can also be applied prior to treatment however, this is not common, nor necessary. Most treatment sessions last between 15-45 minutes.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of sessions differ due to the hair growth process. Only the hair follicle in the anagen growth phase can be effectively targeted and disabled. Each hair goes through the 3 growth phases (anagen, catagen and telogen) independently of the neighboring hairs, so not all hairs will be in the same phase at the same time. Therefore, multiple treatments are required to achieve sufficient reduction in hair growth. This is why most professionals recommend undergoing 3-5 treatment sessions.

What are the most common side effects of the laser treatment?

  • DISCOMFORT/PAIN – Some discomfort and/or pain may be experienced during treatment.
  • REDNESS/SWELLING/BRUISING – Short term redness (erythema) or swelling (edema) of the treated area is common and may occur. There also may be some bruising.
  • HYPOPIGMENTATION / HYPERPIGMENTATION: (Changes in skin Color): – During the healing process, there is a slight possibility that the treated area may become either lighter (hypopigmentation) or darker (hyperpigmentation) in color compared to the surrounding skin. This is usually temporary, but, on a rare occasion, it may be permanent.
  • WOUNDS – Treatment can result in burning, blistering, or bleeding of the treated areas.
  • SUN EXPOSURE / TANNING BEDS / ARTIFICIAL TANNING – May increase risk of side effects and adverse events.
