So let’s talk about COVID-19, you’ve probably heard tons of different things about it by now.

Oh, you haven’t?!

Have you been living under a rock?

Well, on the bright side, you are going to be really good at this “social distancing” stuff.

Okay then, let me lay down the facts so you don’t get the wrong information with all the fake news going around right now.

There are many different strands of coronaviruses, and COVID-19 is one of them. Broken down COVID-19 stands for corona(CO), Virus(VI), and Disease(D). The 19 comes from its former name 2019 novel coronavirus. COVID-19 is quite the name improvement if you ask me, but back to the facts. The symptoms of COVID-19 include: fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

It is important to know that the risk of becoming seriously ill from the virus is relatively low for most people. Older adults and anyone who may have other serious health conditions are at higher risk for developing those more serious complications that hear about. (Some of those other serious health conditions are: Asthma, chronic lung conditions, serious heart conditions, liver disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and anyone undergoing cancer treatment or organ/bone marrow transplant.)

Since COVID-19 is a new disease and there is much still to be learned about the way it spreads and the disease it cause. COVID-19 is thought to primarily be spread from person-to-person. It is thought to be spread between people in close contact (within 6 feet), and respiratory droplets which are produced when an infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes. Those droplets, which are so small they cannot be seen or even felt, can land in the mouth or nose nearby people and be inhaled into the lungs. Maintaining social distance of at least 6 feet is very important in preventing the spread of this disease. The CDC has said that it is possible that COVID-19 is also spread by contact with contaminated surfaces, although this not thought to be the main way it is spread.

What can I do to help keep myself and my family safe and healthy you ask?

Well let me tell you.

There are few very simple things you can do to keep the virus from spreading and protect yourself an other.

  1. Practice frequent hand washing.
    It is recommended that you was your hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds. Singing the Happy Birthday song twice through, or singing the ABCs, at a reasonable pace, will last about 20 second so you know you’ve washed adequately. Not a fan of either of those musical masterpieces, I hear you, I just happen to have a few others that work as well. Singing the chorus to Dolly Parton’s Jolene will take you about 20 seconds. Singing the “We will, we will rock you, rock you” Line from Queen three times will about do the trick too.
    When soap and water isn’t readily available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is adequate.
  2. Stay home when you’re feeling sick.
  3. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands, especially your eyes, mouth, and nose.
  4. Cover your cough/sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue away in a trash can.
  5. Practice social distancing.
    Now is not the time to be visiting with friends and family or leisurely strolling the aisles of the supermarket/hardware store.
    We all understand that it is almost impossible to avoid leaving your house to run errands such as grocery shopping going to the drug store, but when you do try your best to maintain a distance of 6 feet between you and other people.

As I said before, COVID-19 is a new Illness and new information is coming out nearly every day. All we can do is try our best to follow the recommendations to keep ourselves, our families, and others safe and healthy
